chitosan.jpgThe herb chitosan is believed to be a very beneficial role player in weight loss. Besides the obvious affects that it helps prevent fat from being absorbed into the body, it has a lot of other aspects to helping promote weight loss.

Chitosan is 100% natural and acts as a fiber. As you may or may not know, fiber is an important part in creating a cleansing process in the body – extremely critical to weight loss. This is one of the many stated advantages by the producers of chitosan on its benefits of weight loss.

Another stated advantage of taking chitosan is that the chitosan-bound fat departs the intestinal tract without ever inserting itself inside the bloodstream. While not scientifically backed up, if this is true it means that there would be no caloric value. In theory, this would mean that your body would consume less fat and the body would have to return to stored fat to retrieve energy – burning calories in the process.

The positive affects of chitosan can be boosted by taking additional supplements. Some research has shown that by supplementing both chitosan and Vitamin C together, increased absorption of lipids would occur – this is beneficial for weight loss. In addition, taking citric acid increases the swelling properties of chitosan, increasing the amount of fat it consumes.

Because of it’s increased weight loss potential when combined with other nutrients and vitamins, many of the chitosan supplements on the market today are sold as a combination with another item, such as Vitamin C or citric acid.
